Jaime Hayon, Spain
Spanish artist-designer Jaime Hayon was born in Madrid in 1974. His artistic vision was first fully exposed in the ‘Mediterranean Digital Baroque’ and ‘Mon Cirque’ installations. These collections put Jaime at the forefront a new wave that blurred the lines between art, decoration and design and a renaissance in finely-crafted, intricate objects within the context of contemporary design culture.
Jaime further defined his vision in subsequent solo exhibitions and shows at major galleries, and design and art fairs all over the globe. After founding Hayon Studio in 2001, his wide client base has spanned diverse functions and mediums, including furniture for b.d. barcelona, Wittmann, Cassina, Fritz Hansen, &Tradition, and Magis; lighting fixtures for Parachilna, Metalarte and Swarovski; and sophisticated objects for Bisazza, Lladró and Baccarat. He has also executed complete interiors for leading hotels, restaurants, museums, and retail establishments worldwide.
Hayon Studio’s creative base is in Valencia, Spain with offices in Barcelona and Treviso, Italy, Jaime’s work has appeared in the most prestigious art and design publications worldwide. He has won numerous awards, including multiple Elle Decoration International Design Awards, included by Wallpaper Magazine in its “Top 100” list and recognized by the magazine as one of the most influential creators of the last decade, and lauded as a “visionary” and one of the most creative icons by Times magazine.

Catch, Jaime Hayon’s first contribution to &tradition’s collection, is a chair that welcomes you with open arms. Its armrests extend from the shell like literal limbs, ready to embrace you as you sit down. In addition to being a witty personification, it is also an eye-catching piece of design. Serpentine lines give it a playful lightness that is counterbalanced by a sturdy, well-balanced base and legs that ensure maximum comfort. The shell offers comfort alongside great variability. With multiple textile and leather upholstery options available from Kvadrat and CA-MO and three different options for the legs (Wooden legs, tube legs or swivel base), Catch can be adapted to almost any colour scheme. & in the 1980s, Hayon was interested in skating and grafitti culture, which had an impact on the playful, detailed, colourful and humouristic elements in his design style.

Like one of Alexander Calder’s kinetic sculptures. Various shapes suspended in air but kept in place, supported by a metal armature. Creating a curious equilibrium that resembles a mobile - only static.”
At first glance, each Hayon Lounge table is a lesson in geometry. One version features a round shape coupled with a hexagon together with an elongated oval. Another version has a painter’s palette shape, while another version juxtaposes a rounded rectangle with an elongated oval and a circle. Each table is a composition of three distinctive shapes beautifully balanced at different heights which form a unified whole.

“In a world where everyone is rushing around mega multi-tasking, to sit at an ordinary desk feels so static,” says Spanish artist / designer Jaime Hayon. “I felt compelled to design a desk with a feeling of motion, inspired by the kinetic sculptures of Alexander Calder. Balancing various shapes and materials at various heights supported by a metal frame. In theory it’s like a mobile but in reality it’s a desk.”
Each Palette Desk partners two shapes together: an elongated bean shape with a simple round shape. The two merge a marvellous mix of regal materials available in three different combinations. For the table tops, choose from polished Nero Marquina marble or honed Bianco Carrara marble, satin polished brass or stained ash veneer in black, red or grey-green. The base is made from welded and powder coated steel tubes, adding a contemporary touch to this collage of contrasts.
